Neil Cowley accompagna jusqu'en 2002 comme producteur et clavieriste des groupes soul & funk comme Zéro 7, Gabrielle et Brand New Heavies. Puis il fonda son propre groupe, Fragile State. Le premier album "The Facts and The Dreams " fut considéré comme un album majeur du mouvement downtempo.
