Suman Sarkar est issu d'une famille où la musique fait partie intégrante de la tradition familiale. Son père Sri Santosh Kumar Sarkar était chanteur, professeur de musique et compositeur. Il fut le premier maître de Suman au tabla. Plus tard, il suivit les cours de Sri Suhrit Chakraborty, lui-même élève d'Ustad Habibuddin Khan d'Ajrara et d'Ustad Gami khan de Dehli Gharana. Cela fait plus de dix ans que Suman se produit à Calcutta, accompagnant les plus célèbres musiciens comme Nishat Khan, Professeur Subrato Roy Chowdhury et Partha Bose.
