Fille du percussionniste Pete Escovedo, elle devient très tôt une musicienne confirmée et participe aux tournées de Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, ou Diana Ross. Mais c'est avec Prince qu'elle se fait un nom, lorsqu'elle tient la batterie lors des tournées Sign o' the Times Tour et Lovesexy Tour. Prince lui produira ses trois premiers albums.
