Le groupe a été fondé en 1987 par le compositeur irlandais Michael McGlynn sous le nom de An Uaithne, prenant le nom actuel en 1991. Le groupe a enregistré 17 albums et atteint un niveau élevé de succès international, dont un rôle important dans Riverdance de 1994 à 1996.
